Managing Our Longings or Messing Up God’s Plans

Every desire makes us a promise. It whispers, “If you pursue me, you’ll be happier, stronger or more fulfilled.” But not every desire tells the truth. Some longings lead us toward God’s best. Others offer a little pleasure now but leave a lot of pain later.

Paul warns us in Colossians 3 that not every desire comes from God. If we aren’t careful, earthly desires can become idols. We begin expecting them to give us the satisfaction that only God can provide. Sin may fascinate us for a moment, but eventually it can assassinate something valuable in our lives — our peace, our purpose, our relationships or our future.

Psalm 63 shows us how David handled his longings during one of the hardest seasons of his life. He was in a dry and weary land, facing circumstances he couldn’t control. Still, he said, “You, God, are my God; earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you.” David’s situation was difficult, but he didn’t allow his circumstances to determine the direction of his heart.

First, David refused to doubt God’s goodness. Hard seasons can tempt us to look for relief in the wrong places. Adam and Eve knew what God had said, yet they reached for the forbidden fruit. They allowed one desire to become more important than trusting God. We can know the Bible and still struggle to surrender. God’s boundaries are designed to protect something good within us.

David also desired God’s presence more than his own plans. He remembered seeing God’s glory in the sanctuary. Worship is more than singing a song or attending a service. It happens when we allow God’s presence to change us. Through Christ, we receive forgiveness. Through God’s Word, we grow. Through the Holy Spirit, we receive comfort, wisdom and strength.

Finally, David allowed grace to deepen his love for God’s leadership. He declared, “Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.” His praise flowed from a heart that had experienced God’s goodness. David had learned that even when life didn’t go according to plan, God was still worthy of his trust.

We all have longings. The question is: Where will we take them? Will we ask God to bless whatever we want, or will we surrender what we want to His leadership? That choice matters.

A satisfied soul grows from a surrendered life. When we bring our desires under God’s Word, He helps us recognize what is healthy, release what is harmful and trust His work. His plans may not unfold the way we expected, but His leadership is always good.

When we manage our longings instead of allowing them to manage us, God can lead us into a life far better than anything sin could promise.
