If you’ve ever traveled, you know how good it feels to come home. We may have had the best time, seen beautiful places, and made wonderful memories, but eventually something inside us begins to say, “I’m ready to go home.” Home is where we belong. It’s where we can breathe, settle in, and let our hearts and souls be refreshed. It really is true—there’s no place like home!
Psalm 84 paints a beautiful picture of God’s presence as home: “Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself.” Birds have a built-in homing instinct—an inward knowing that leads them home without a map or GPS. Some fly thousands of miles to return to a place of warmth and safety. And when they arrive, they know they’re home.
In the same way, there is a restlessness in every heart until we find our home in God. We may try to satisfy that longing through people, pleasure, possessions, or success. But we were created to live close to God—near His altar. Saint Augustine wrote, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in You.” Until our hearts rest in Him, we haven’t found our true home.
Near God’s altar, we discover that we belong to Him—and that we matter to Him. Sparrows are plain, common, and abundant. Yet Jesus said that not one sparrow falls to the ground outside our Father’s care. Then He reminds us, “You are worth more than many sparrows.”
Sometimes life can make us feel insignificant, overlooked, or unseen. But we are never unseen by God. Our value isn’t based on our accomplishments, appearance, or the approval of others. We matter because we belong to Him. It’s not about who we are but Whose we are.
The altar also reminds us of the sacrifice of Jesus. Because He gave His life for us, our lives can be forgiven, restored, and redeemed in amazing ways. God loves us just as we are, but He loves us too much to leave us there. He purifies our hearts, develops our potential, and helps us live lives of purpose. We were created to make a difference in our world.
And near God, we find safety. Proverbs says, “The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” A swallow may travel thousands of miles to build its nest in a place protected from danger. In the same way, staying close to God gives us refuge in an uncertain world.
This doesn’t mean we will never face trouble. It means we never face it alone. Our Father is with us, leading us, guarding our hearts, and holding us steady. And when life feels uncertain, His faithful love reminds us that we are always welcome, always known, and always held.
In God’s presence, we belong. We matter. We are safe. So, let’s follow that holy homing instinct and draw close to Him. Near His altar, our restless hearts finally find home.
