Faith’s Reward or Folly’s Regret

Regret is a tough teacher.

None of us sign up for the class, but most of us have taken it!

We’ve all made decisions we wish we could go back and change. But here’s the good news: God never intended regret to have the final word in our lives. He invites us to trade the regret of doing life our way for the reward of doing life His way.

In Psalm 14:1–7, David says, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’” Now, that certainly describes someone who denies God’s existence. But there’s another way we can live as though there is no God. We can believe in Him, love Him, go to church — and still ignore His direction.

That’s where trouble starts.

King Asa learned this the hard way. Early in his reign, Asa sought the Lord, and God blessed his kingdom with peace, victory, and prosperity. But somewhere along the way, Asa stopped depending on God and started depending on himself. Even when God warned him, Asa refused to listen.

He started well, but he didn’t finish well.

And there’s a lesson in that for all of us: yesterday’s faithfulness can’t replace today’s obedience.

God isn’t looking for ways to condemn us. He’s looking for opportunities to strengthen us.

Scripture says His eyes search throughout the earth for people whose hearts are fully committed to Him.

God wants to guide us.
He wants to help us.
He wants to bless us.

The problem isn’t that God has stopped leading. Sometimes, we’ve just stopped following.

That’s why faith matters so much. God’s commands aren’t designed to steal our joy; they’re designed to protect it. The world makes plenty of promises, but those promises often leave people carrying burdens they were never created to bear. God’s way produces something different — peace, strength, freedom, and hope.

Psalm 14 ends with David looking forward to the salvation God would bring. We know that hope has a name: Jesus Christ.

Because of Jesus, failure doesn’t have to be final. No mistake is beyond His grace. No sin is beyond His forgiveness. And no regret is beyond His power to redeem.

Every day, we get to decide whose voice will lead our lives. We can trust our limited understanding, or we can trust the God who already sees the end from the beginning.

One path leaves us looking back with regret. The other lets us look forward with faith.

Choose faith. Follow His lead. And trust God with the outcome.
