How To Stay on God’s Path

Last summer, I was at the beach with my grandkids when I heard a man exclaim to his wife, “Honey! Someone stole our stuff!” I chuckled to myself and thought, “He must not be from around here.” Why? Because he wasn’t aware of the drift—the pull of the water slowly but surely taking him away from where he was supposed to be without him noticing until it was almost too late.

This is how life works. As believers, we establish our lives in Christ, but if we’re not careful, the demands and distractions of life can pull us away, causing us to drift far from where we started and far from where we want to be. And it happens in often subtle but dangerous ways.

Hebrews 2:1 speaks directly to this: “We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.”

Scripture reveals two major reasons we drift: wrong cultures (Hebrews 2:1; Romans 12:2) and wrong companions (1 Corinthians 15:33). Both try to convince us they’ll make us happier and more fulfilled than God will. But that’s a lie! The world’s happiness is short-lived; the joy, peace, and fulfillment that come from embracing God’s way are eternal.

Scripture also shows us the best antidote to a drifting heart: a trusting one. Trust doesn’t mean imply passive hope, though; it means actively choosing God’s way every day, even when it’s challenging, uncomfortable, countercultural, or requires sacrifice.

The reality is this: if we want God’s leadership in our lives, we don’t just have to know Him intimately; we also have to trust Him fully, leaning on Him in every decision and allowing Him to guide every step, even when we cannot see the full path ahead.

Hebrews 3 shows us how.

First, we must fix our thoughts on Jesus. Verses 1–2 say, “Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus…” Fixing our eyes on Jesus transforms our desires, aligns our decisions with His will, and motivates us to live faithfully, producing real spiritual growth over time.

Second, we must welcome the Holy Spirit’s work. Verses 7–8 say, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts…” Hearing God requires obedience—embracing His wisdom, trusting His guidance, and allowing His Spirit to shape our choices and character, even when it challenges our own understanding or plans.

Third, we must connect within a godly community. Verses 12–13 say, “Encourage one another daily…” Surrounding ourselves with people who strengthen our faith keeps us accountable, builds resilience against temptation, inspires perseverance, and reinforces the truth of God’s promises in tangible ways.

When we develop a trusting heart over a drifting heart, actively following Jesus, listening to His Spirit, and relying on godly community, we will experience the beautiful life God has prepared for us—one marked by maturity, peace, and lasting joy!
