How To Resist Distraction

Distraction has clearly become an epidemic. Recent studies reveal Americans check their phones an average of 90 times per day. And what’s even more alarming—research also suggests that the average human attention span has dropped to just eight seconds, while a goldfish can focus for nine!

We all know technology is a major factor, but distractions don’t always come in the form of notifications and screens. In our walk with Christ, they often appear as opportunities, opposition, or compromise. So how can we defeat these distractions? We find the answer in the story of Nehemiah—a man who knew how to resist distraction and rebuild what looked impossible.

First, Nehemiah valued his mission above everything else. In Nehemiah 6:2-3, when his opposition tried to distract him with a meeting, he replied, “I am carrying on a great project and cannot go down.” He refused to let even good opportunities pull him away from what God had called him to do.

Jesus modeled this same focus in Luke 4:43, when people begged Him to stay and heal more. He responded, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” Like Nehemiah and Jesus, we cannot allow busyness, people-pleasing, or lack of discipline to derail us from our God-given purpose.

Second, Nehemiah valued prayer over retaliation. When Sanballat spread potentially deadly rumors about him (Nehemiah 6:5-6, 9), Nehemiah didn’t fight back—he prayed for strength. This teaches us that opposition shouldn’t pull us into arguments; it should push us into prayer. Prayer invites God into our battles, replaces emotional reactions with wisdom, and reminds us the fight ultimately belongs to Him.

Third, Nehemiah valued faithfulness over compromise. When warned that assassins were coming for him (Nehemiah 6:10-11), he knew hiding in fear would dishonor God. So he declared firmly, “I will not go!” Compromise is always a slow, silent killer of our calling, and Nehemiah refused to give it any ground—just as we should.

Finally, Nehemiah valued God’s lordship above all else. Nehemiah 6:15-16 reveals the result of his focus: a wall destroyed for 140 years was rebuilt in just 52 days by ordinary people. And when everyone saw it, they recognized it was God who had done this miraculous work.

Friend, what in your life needs rebuilt? A broken relationship? A shattered dream? A calling you walked away from? You may look at it thinking it’s too far gone, but God specializes in impossible rebuilds!

Like Nehemiah, you don’t need to be perfect—you just need to be focused and faithful. Stay dedicated to your mission. Let opposition drive you to prayer. Refuse compromise when fear whispers that you should quit. And one day, when people look at your restored life, they’ll know exactly what happened. They’ll look at you the same way they looked at that rebuilt wall, declaring, “Look what the Lord has done!”
