This weekend, we celebrate some of the most incredible people in the world—moms. Statistics say 122 million calls are made on Mother’s Day, more than any other day of the year. About 152 million cards are sent, a quarter of all annual flowers are sold, and in 2024, $33.5 billion was spent. Why? Because we all know—moms are important. Not just to their families, but to our communities, to our nation, and ultimately, to our world.
Abraham Lincoln once said, “The strength of a nation lies in the homes of its people.” Strong homes build strong communities, and strong communities build a strong nation—and moms are at the heart of that strength.
That’s why in Nehemiah 4:14, Nehemiah charged families: “Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.”
Our homes matter. And when I think about this verse, I’m reminded of three “homes” in Scripture that each of us moms has a responsibility to fight for while on this earth.
The first is your home—because you matter to your family. In 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, Paul writes that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, bought with a price, meant to honor God. That means keeping ourselves healthy—sleeping well, eating well, honoring the Sabbath, and tending to our mental and emotional health. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s stewardship. Your world needs you!
The second is our home—because your family matters to you. On a stained glass window in the Graff home are Joshua’s words: “…But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15). We must each come to the place where we fight for those under our roof to know, love, and serve God. One of the most powerful ways to contribute to making America great again is to make our homes great again—and it starts with that declaration. Here’s what causes homes to be firm and to flourish: knowing and practicing God’s truth, and loving like Jesus. When we live and teach His truth in love—and His love in truth—those in our care catch on.
The third home is God’s home—because we all matter to Him. In Mark 11:17, after clearing the temple, Jesus declares, “My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations.” God’s house is for everyone, regardless of background, culture, or race. We fight for this home by serving faithfully with our time, talent, and treasure—and by sowing unity among our fellow believers.
As we fight for these three homes, we will leave a legacy that long outlasts us. So be encouraged, moms—what you do matters more than you know! You are shaping families, building communities, and changing the world, and there is no one else who can do what you do. Happy Mother’s Day—you are so incredibly loved!
