Famous Last Words

As a pastor, I’ve stood at bedsides when someone has taken their final breath and stepped into eternity. It’s always a holy moment—a sacred tension between grief and awe. In those final seconds, words matter. People say what counts.

That’s why each year as we approach Good Friday, I like to focus on the last words of Jesus. His final statements from the cross were not random cries of pain; they were intentional revelations of who He is and what He accomplished for us.

First, as Jesus hung between two criminals, brutalized and mocked, He prayed for His executioners: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” In unimaginable agony, He chose mercy, revealing a Savior whose first reflex is forgiveness. For us, this means we are never beyond the reach of grace—and we are called to extend that same forgiveness to others.

Next, while one criminal ridiculed Him, the other confessed his guilt. Jesus answered the second man with a promise of immediate salvation: “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.” Even in His suffering, Jesus was saving. This reminds us that salvation is a gift of grace through faith, not effort, showing that hope is always within reach.

Then, seeing His mother and the disciple John standing nearby, Jesus paused the painful redemption story to care for His family: “Woman, here is your son… Here is your mother” (John 19:25–27). This reveals a Savior who values relationship and compassion, even in His darkest hour, just as we should.

After that, as Jesus continued suffering in the darkness, He cried out with a voice of anguish: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46). In that moment, Jesus bore the full weight of our sin and separation from God, revealing the crushing cost of our redemption. It’s why we never have to face God’s judgment or abandonment—Jesus already endured it in our place.

Then Jesus said simply, “I am thirsty” (John 19:28). The Creator of living water experienced human need. This reveals His full humanity, reminding us we have a High Priest who understands our weakness.

Next, He declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30). The work of salvation was complete—the debt was paid in full. This reveals a victorious Savior, allowing us to rest in what Christ has accomplished.

Finally, Jesus prayed, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit” (Luke 23:46). With perfect trust and total surrender, He yielded His life. Jesus lived with true confidence in the Father—His example urging us to do the same.

Together, these seven statements give us the full gospel: mercy that reaches the worst of sinners, grace that covers every need, and victory that conquers even death. As we observe Good Friday, let us reflect deeply on these words, carry their truth into our lives, and live in the hope, love, and victory Christ secured for all who believe!
