Why Community Matters

A famous NFL coach used to tell his team, “Everyone wants to live on Easy Street, but the path to Easy Street goes through the sewer.” I love that—because it’s life, and it’s true!

Few people in Scripture understood this reality better than Job. We find one of the most beautiful moments in his story in Job 42:10, when everything Job had lost—and more—was restored after he prayed for his friends. His breakthrough came through relationship.

This isn’t an isolated moment in Scripture. Time and again, we see God restore lives through meaningful relationships. He places desires in our hearts that are meant to be fulfilled not only through His help, but through one another. Jesus said in Matthew 18:19, “Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven.”

Jesus wants us to understand that answered prayer often flows through agreement—agreement with Him and with the right people in our lives. When we walk in unity, God provides what we need. The power of agreement in relationship unlocks doors we could never open alone.

So what kinds of relationships help us reach new levels of growth and fruitfulness? Scripture points us to four essential ones: spiritual parents, mentors, teachers, and friends.

Spiritual parents help birth the potential within us. They believe in us before we believe in ourselves, nurture discipline, and strengthen us through each stage of growth. The relationship between Elijah and Elisha in 2 Kings illustrates this beautifully. Elisha faithfully followed his spiritual father, then went on to perform twice as many miracles. That’s the power of spiritual parenting!

Mentors inspire us through their example, empower us through training, and reproduce God’s blessing in our lives. Hebrews 13:7-8 reminds us: “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” When we learn from those who’ve gone before us, we build on their foundation.

Teachers shape our perspective and release power through knowledge. Hosea 4:6 warns, “My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.” The right teacher at the right time can mature us, sharpen our understanding, and completely change our life’s trajectory.

Friends are loyal, faithful, honest, wise, caring, reliable, and supportive. Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Good friendships don’t just comfort us—they challenge us, refine our character, and call us higher.

When we intentionally treasure and invest in these four relationships, we position ourselves to experience increased favor, accelerated progress, and breakthrough in every area of life. God designed us for connection, and through these divine relationships, we unlock the fullness of our potential. We were never created to journey alone, but to grow stronger together in God’s design. We are always better together!
