How to Live in the Reality of Christmas - A Significant Life

How to Live in the Reality of Christmas

Step Into Significance Devotional

We sing them every year. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing. Angels We Have Heard on High. It Came Upon the Midnight Clear.

These beloved Christmas carols all point to the same moment—one that might just be my favorite part of the Christmas story. Shepherds were watching their fields in the darkness, probably exhausted from their work, when suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared with the glory of God blazing around them. Terrified, they heard words that would soon make history:

“Do not be afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be for all the people; for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord…” (Luke 2:10-11 NASB)

Then a whole host of heavenly armies filled the sky, praising God and declaring, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among people with whom He is pleased.” (Luke 2:14 NASB)

As we sing the songs penned from the gospel accounts, the melodies and lyrics flow from our lips by memory. But do we really grasp what we’re singing? And more importantly—do we allow that truth to change how we live?

It’s easy to join in singing about God’s glory—but do we recognize what it can actually do for us? It’s easy to sing about His peace—but have we discovered how it brings us power? It’s natural to sing about His joy—but do we truly experience it in our daily lives?

To live in the reality of Christmas, we must first understand its message. Then, we must let that message transform us.

The message is simple: Jesus is our answer, to everything. When we surrender our lives to Him, He works in and through us in powerful ways.

As we read the Christmas story, we’ll see that He invites us to accept three life-changing gifts.

The first is salvation. Romans 3:23 reminds us that all have sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. But God rescued us from that loss and offers to restore blessing into our lives. No matter what we’ve done or where we’ve been, His grace is enough!

The second is hope—not wishful thinking, but confident expectation. This hope doesn’t disappoint because the One who promised is faithful (Rom. 5:5; Heb. 10:23). When everything around us feels uncertain, His promises remain unshakable!

The third is favor. God wants us to experience His goodness, to feel His life-changing love that causes us to live blessed and be a blessing to others. He doesn’t just want to save us—He wants to surround us with His kindness!

So friends, as we go about our holiday season, I pray we’re all filled with fresh gratitude for the message those angels proclaimed. When we truly understand it, letting it shape how we live, Christmas takes on a whole new meaning—not just for one season, but for every day that follows!
