How To Experience Answered Prayer - A Significant Life

How To Experience Answered Prayer

Step Into Significance Devotional

In my first year of college, I attended church every time the doors were open. I was determined to grow in my faith and knew I had a lot to learn.

One week felt exceptionally rough. I was trying to decide whether to continue playing college baseball or quit to focus on the calling I felt to ministry. I had been working extra jobs to pay college tuition, leaving me exhausted and in need of answers.

That Wednesday night, I walked into the church sanctuary early to listen to the worship team practice. My pastor sat beside me and asked, “How are you doing, Jim?”
I responded, “I guess I’m doing pretty good, under the circumstances.”

Chuckling, he asked, “What are you doing under there?”
We continued our conversation, and I realized my answer wasn’t thinking more or working harder. I needed to understand how to pray.

So that entire year, I made learning to pray my goal. I listened to teaching daily, deciding I would not live my life without experiencing God’s work in my heart. I still thank God for that year because it set me up for a life of prayers answered and promises realized. My journey hasn’t been perfect, but amid life’s questions, I now understand something more important than simply what to do. I know where to go: the feet of Jesus.

Do you ever feel the way I did that day? Confused by life circumstances? Exhausted from trying to decide which way to turn? Let me encourage you as my pastor encouraged me: you won’t find your answer simply by working harder or doing more. You’ll find your answer when you come to understand and embrace the power and practice of prayer.

According to Bible Gateway, God made us 5,467 promises in Scripture. And in 1 John 5:14-15, we see these promises come to pass when we learn to approach prayer not with confidence in ourselves, but with confidence in God.

Praying with genuine assurance in God requires understanding three things. First, that He is always for us. Romans 8:28 says, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

We also must believe God will always help us. Psalm 46:1 reminds us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Then, we must remember God is always with us. In Deuteronomy 31:8 Moses told the Israelites, “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Learning to pray with confidence in God changed my life, and I know it can do the same for you. As you embrace prayer God’s way, I believe He will work miracles on your behalf. The rest of your life can be the best of your life, friend. Let’s make 2025 the year it all began!
